Am I Eligible to Enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan?

Students with a Qualifying Event

Opt-Out/Waiver

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Fall: 06/20/2025 - 08/19/2025

Spring/Summer: 11/07/2025 - 01/25/2026


You may request to waive out of the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) if your alternate insurance health plan meets the following requirements:

Waiver Requirements:
1. Policy must be a US employer-sponsored group health plan, or a Government Sponsored plan.

  • Covers inpatient (hospital) and outpatient care for mental health and substance abuse disorder conditions the same as any other medical condition.
  • Doctor office visits for medical, including mental health, and alcohol/drug abuse conditions.
  • Provides coverage for all Minimum Essential Health Benefits.
  • May not be a health care or pharmacy reimbursement plan (A reimbursement plan means the student must pay for services and seek reimbursement from the insurance provider)
  • Have no per medical or mental health/substance abuse dollar maximums limits.

2. Deductible of $750 or less per year (except for US Employer plans)
3. Proof of Repatriation expenses in the amount of $7,500 or more
4. Proof of Medical Evacuation of the insured to the insured’s home country of $10,000 or more
 
Waiver Minimum Essential Health Benefits: 
1. Ambulatory patient services 
2. Emergency services 
3. Hospitalization (such as surgery) 
4. Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (care for a mother and baby before and after the baby is born) 
5. Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment, counseling, and psychotherapy. 
6. Prescription drugs 
7. Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices 
8. Laboratory services 
9. Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
